Freeing South African Stephen McGowan from Al-Qaeda

Gift of the Givers' negotiator Anas al-Hamati, who helped secure Yolande Korkie’s release in Yemen is in South Africa, spoke to John Robbie to share his experiences with negotiators working to free another South African, Stephen McGowan, held hostage in Mali for the past three years.

In his interview with John, al-Hamati said that he has been sharing his ideas and experiences with the Gift of the Givers negotiators in Mali. He says that approaching the rescue mission in a peaceful way, even if it takes a long time, does guarantee. He says that financial resources and support are key, as well as acknowledging that he is on a mission to just negotiate, as opposed to changing t captors' minds and beliefs.

al-Hamati reflects that Pierre Korkie wouldn't have been killed if the US hadn't attacked. He says that they were 8 hours away from rescuing him.
