A tribute to Karabo Chirwa, a young life lost

15-year-old Karabo Chirwa has died but her courageous story will certainly not be forgotten.

Our journey with young Karabo began in 2013 when we received a call from her teacher seeking help.

Her mother died when she was the age of three and she was raised by a relative.

Born HIV positive, Karabo suffered from genital warts for most of her life. Her condition caused her a great deal of pain and created discomfort for her in the classroom space.

Professor Elna McIntosh heard her story from The Redi Tlhabi Show and, together with Dr R Newaj, provided Karabo with free medical treatment and support.

WATCH: School teacher Tebogo Menoe, was nominated as a Lead SA hero for her perseverance in helping Karabo.

Through generous contributions from CapeTalk and 702 listeners, Karabo had groceries and medical support for several months.

In late 2014, Karabo’s health started to deteriorate and part of the problem was her living conditions.

Karabo’s doctors determined that further treatment would not be effective if she continued living where she was at the time.

After a lengthy stay in hospital, she was moved to Lambano Sanctuary, a hospice that cares for HIV positive children.

Karabo was very happy at the sanctuary but after some time she was re-admitted to Baragwanath Hospital.
