Medupi completion could be delayed by 5 years

Eskom has now confirmed that the first unit of the Medupi power station to come online yesterday and has now been handed over to the utility and that it is now consistently supplying power to the national grid.

This unit reportedly produces around 800 megawatts for Eskom, since March 2015, and has alleviated the effects of loadshedding.

Stephen spoke to Independent Energy Consultant, Ted Blom about whether this is likely to ease the strain off the grid a bit.

The 800 megawatts supply is only 2% of Eskom's network. Won't make a significant impact but it is a welcome change.

Ted Blom, Independent Energy Consultant

We'll have to see within a year or so if it is in a fixed state. I'm not convinced yet until all the problems have been sorted out.

Medupi is not out of the woods yet though. It doesn't have adequate water to fully commission all 6 units (it's only able to commission 3 units) at this stage. It will probably only be able to commission all 6 in 2023.

Ted Blom, Independent Energy Consultant

They need built the second phase of the Lesotho high lands dam to bring water to the power station. And they haven't started yet.
