Following reports of police shooting over the weekend, the safety of police officers is questioned. Three separate incidences were reported where police officers were involved in shootings while on/off duty.
In Cape Town, South African Police Service (SAPS) members came under fire when they approached three unidentified men in Delft South during the early hours of Friday morning.
In Gauteng, two police officers were killed just hours apart from one another over the weekend.
CapeTalk’s John Maytham spoke to Eldred de Klerk on police safety:
According to De Klerk the number of police killed in the past eight months has escalated to 56 and this is unusual compared to other years.
When asked why is the number of cop killings escalating, De Klerk said:
There are perceptions that police are vulnerable and that it’s an ailing dysfunctional organisation which unfortunately render police vulnerable for organised crimes— Eldred de Klerk
