Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, marketer and distributor of South African apples and pears announced the discovery of Bigbucks – a new superior clone in the Gala family.
The discovery was made by Buks Nel, Tru-Cape’s varietal expert, in an orchard on Oak Valley Estate in 2011.
Bigbucks is a mutated apple that is redder than normal and remains so for longer than other Gala apples.
The discovery was kept a secret for the past four years until now as they’ve received breeders’ rights.
Nel says that Bigbucks will be picked and stored the same way as other Gala types.
CapeTalk’s John Maytham spoke to Roelf Pienaar, Managing Director at Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing:
According to Pienaar, Nel came across this discovery by chance. He says this kind of discoveries are very rare.
