The Book Show

All you need to know about Books and Cake

Once again, the Open Book Festival brings literary giants and book lovers together for a five-day festival about all kinds of books.

Over 100 well-known authors will be participating in the festival this year – among them Petina Gappah, who’ll be discussing her new book The Book of Memory, Andreas Norman and Svante Weyler from Sweden, Congolese writer Alain Mabanckou.

Every year the festival showcases the best of South African writing and fostering a love of books and reading among Cape Town’s youth, while also attracting local and international participants.

Love Layer Cakes by Peggy Porschen

"Containing over 30 recipes for delectable sponges and mouth-watering fillings, Love Layer Cakes provides the inspiration for years of flavoursome and fool-proof baking. The book contains cakes for teatime treats that are proven favourites at The Peggy Porschen Parlour in central London as well as brand new recipes developed especially for this book."

LETTUCE AND A LADY’S BREAST by Billy Gallagher

"This extraordinary autobiography covers fifty years of Billy’s culinary career, plus his early years as a young boy and his life today as a quadriplegic who still manages to stay as busy as ever publishing magazines, organising top chefs’ dinners, sharing his knowledge with industry as a consultant and a devoted family man."

CAKE CHIC by Peggy Porschen

"Peggy Porschen is best known as cake maker to the stars, having made spectacular cakes for the likes of Elton John, Stella McCartney and Madonna. Her third book, Cake chic, sees her teaching the art of fine cake and cookie making to the home-user.

The book is essentially a guide to creating these glorious looking things, but is definitely one for the aspirational chef – although children working with adults might like to cook some of the more fun cakes and biscuits. This is cooking for those with patience, too, as there are multiple stages to each creation."

Eugene Joubert is the cake extraordinaire who joined Jenny and Redi in studio after having tried some of the recipes in the cook books reviewed on the show this week.

Redi had to practice massive self-control when these cakes were placed in front of her during the show this morning.

A work of art, this is pure genius. You wouldn't be doing this for therapy but just to prove what you can do with your hands.
