There were apparent violent clashes yesterday between supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the South African Students Congress (SASCO), which is aligned with the ANC, at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Soshanguve campus.
The scuffle reportedly broke out while EFF leader Julius Malema addressed students ahead of SRC elections due to take place on Thursday.
At one point a video, taken by a reporter for The Citizen newspaper, clearly records Julius Malema using the phrase, 'fighters attack'.
Stephen Grootes speaks to EFF President, Julius Malema about this violent incident, particularly EFF's retaliation. Said Malema:
The ANC people were attacking innocent students and throwing stones at us. We had to defend ourselves. We are against violence but if we are attacked we will also attack!— Economic Freedom Fighters President, Julius Malema
