The Mayor of the Umzinyathi District Municipality, James Mthethwa, has been quoted as claiming that homosexuality is "bringing shame to communities" and spreads AIDS in the front page report of The Sowetan newspaper this morning.
According to The Sowetan, Mthethwa was speaking during the launch of the Umzinyathi Community Health Work Training Project, held in Dundee in KwaZulu Natal this week.
Stephen Grootes was unable to reach the Mayor's office for a response.
Instead, he spoke to Sonke Gender Justice's Mbuyiselo Botha who strongly objects to the Mayor's utterances.
It can't be correct to say things like this that are extremely irresponsible, especially in such an already existing homophobic culture in South Africa. We know there is a history of violence against gays and lesbians.— Mbuyiselo Botha, Sonke Gender Justice
