Timing of Woolworths' announcement on sweets at checkout aisles strategic?

Last week, there was a lot of debate on the radio regarding the Pick n Pay Stickeez campaign, with many people weighing in on whether it was good or bad.

Jonathan Cherry told Kieno Kammies that according to the retail giant, turnover had gone up 12% as a result of the promotion, but asked whether in the long run it would hurt their reputation - as they've not championed the cause of the consumer by lowering prices or given them a deal that would leave the customer as the winner.

Then Woolworths announced that they would be removing sweets and chocolates from all its checkout aisles, as this has been a contentious issue globally for a few years now, with a number of overseas supermarket chains having taken the same decision in the past.

Cherry reckons that while it was a long time coming, the timing of the announcement was well-timed.
