Commonwealth Games: SA is prepared for high hosting costs

Following a unanimous vote in favour of Durban, South Africa will be the first African country to host the Commonwealth Games and this victory is being touted as the gateway to a potentially successful Olympic Games bid.

EWN's Mandy Wiener (standing in for Stephen Grootes) spoke to a jubilant Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula about the latest development. Mbalula said he was happy for South Africa and urged the country not to take the victory lightly as this kind of opportunity is not freely given and makes for a fantastic opportunity for the country.

To us it's like Christmas, everything big has passed through our shores. This is especially great for our tourism, people who will come into the country, will leave money.

Fikile Mbalula, Sport and Recreation Minister

Asked about the cost of hosting the Commonwealth Games, Mbalula said that all the money that will be spent on the games has been planned for.

Mandy also spoke to Sir Craig Reedie, the head of the World Anti Doping Agency and a former chair of the British Olympic Association. Reedie was a board member for London 2012 and was an advisor to Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Asked how South African can best prepare for these games (and possibly the Olympics), Sir Reedie said:

Important thing is planning. Make it sustainable, involve your local people and get them enthusiastic about it.

Sir Craig Reedie, Head of the World Anti Doping Agency

Plan venues, capacity and who will run the venues after the games. Don't have white elephants. Plan for that in advance. Use existing facilities by converting them, like convention centers.
