Doctor shares tips to give insomniacs a good night's sleep

According to a study by the South African Society of Sleep Medicine, insomnia affects up to 40% of South Africans and contributes to depression and other lifestyle diseases like weight gain.

Medical doctor and homeopath, Dr Erika Coertzen spoke to 702's John Robbie this morning about factors driving insomnia, the different types of the condition and how to deal with it.

Dr Coertzen said it is important to investigate the underlying problems that lead to insomnia.

Stress plays a major role and a busy lifestyle. It's important to make lifestyle changes. Most people take a prescription drug in the beginning; it has its place but it's not a long-term solution.

Dr Coertzen said she primarily advocates homeopathic medication and recommends Sedatif PC. On dealing with stress, she said:

It's important to exercise regularly and see a professional if you have stress and can't handle it. The first step would be to go to a GP. Don't ignore it, it doesn't just go away, it becomes a pattern.
