Prasa: Molefe says board will act on Madonsela's findings

Prasa (Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa) Chairperson, Dr Popo Molefe , spoke to 702's John Robbie this morning about how the maladministration and corruption uncovered by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will be dealt with.

Molefe said Prasa was committed to taking the necessary steps to deal with the Public Protector's findings.

He said, among other steps to be taken, they had asked for a senior procurement officer from national treasury to join them while they restructure that department.

Asked about former CEO Lucky Montana's threats of legal action against the board of Prasa, Molefe said:

It doesn't concern me. It is his [Montana's] constitutional right to do so. We can't stop him. If we are sued as a board, we will defend ourselves. We have received a letter from his lawyers, saying he still regards himself as a director at Prasa and secondly that he thinks the board should not implement the recommendations of the Public Protector's report.

Speaking about the locomotives that are said to be too tall, Molefe confirmed that the locomotives do exceed Transnet specifications. He added:

Transnet and Prasa technical teams are working together on that matter and the locomotive are undergoing a series of tests under the rail safety regulator. We will wait for the regulator's announcement.

Molefe said bringing the old Prasa board (that was implicated in the report) to book was the responsibility of the national treasury. He said their responsibility (as the current board) was finding ways to correct some of the wrongs uncovered by Madonsela.
