Durban 2022: Is the city ready to inspire?

Durban has been unveiled as the Commonwealth Games host for 2022. The announcement was made earlier this week in Auckland, New Zealand.

South Africa’s east coast city was set to run against a Canadian city which pulled out of the bidding race in February this year due to the negative impact of the fall in oil prices worldwide.

South Africans have had mixed reactions to the announcement of the prestigious event being hosted in Durban, while many are ecstatic other took to social media to express their concern about what this means for the country's economy.

702 and Cape Talk's Africa Melane spoke to sports reporter, Alec Wilkinson who covered the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow about what lessons South Africa's playground can learn from that experience - and avoiding making the same mistakes and mishaps.

Wilkinson's advice was "it would be a great shame for the games to come to Durban and for them not to be supported by the people. But you can’t just expect the people of Durban not to be concerned about money - they need to have the assurance that money is not being wasted on the games ..."
