Dr Schomer: What happens after death? Ways to cope with loss of a parent

Hearing the news of the passing of either your mom or dad could be traumatising at any age. Adults are often surprised at the overwhelming emotions that follow the death of a parent because adults are mostly expected to have a strong reaction to the loss of a parent.

Dr Schomer says when death strikes we need to take time feel, to sense, to talk and time to construe.

This hurried society has nicely parcelled it in a plastic kind of a bag and said here it is, sort it out.

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

According to Dr Schomer death of a parent is the most painful because parents are there to take care of you, to motivate you and cajole you. He says with time the pain gets better but it will not go away for good.

Acknowledged and accept your grief and if possible share with someone you trust.

Dr Helgo Schomer, resident psychologist

Ways to cope with loss of a parent:

  • Don’t hurry through grief; you are entitled to mourn your parents.

  • As an adult, don’t be hard on yourself for feeling the pain, grief is normal.

  • Know that you will always be your parent’s child even when they are gone, honour them even in death.

  • Keep in mind that grief does not end, grief comes and goes.

  • Don’t expect to be ready because your parents are old or ill.
