Family Matters: Benefits of yoga for children

An organization in Cape Town is working very hard to change the view that yoga is an elitist practice, available only to a privileged few.

Earthchild Project is spreading the practice of yoga in Cape Town schools, and under-resourced communities to share a culture of healthy living, respect for the body and respect for the planet.

Talking to CapeTalk’s Pippa Hudson, Janna Kretzmar, founder and director of the Earthchild Project says that yoga can offer children practical tools to deal with some of the social problem in their communities.

The feedback we’ve gotten from children is that they feel more relaxed. They tell us that when their parents are fighting they go and meditate.

Janna Kretzmar

EarthChild Project was established in 2007 and currently operates in seven schools, mainly in Khayelitsha and lavender hill schools.

Even if we can’t change gangsterism and crime in these communities, but we can offer children a practical tool they can use to deal with those challenges and trauma.

Janna Kretzmar

The Benefits of yoga for kids:

  • Stronger sense of self
  • Develop body awareness
  • Enhance concentration
  • Create self confidence
  • Build peace of mind
  • Improve academic capabilities
