Health and Wellness: Back pain, causes and prevention measures

The 6th to 12th of September marks the National Back and Physiotherapy awareness week. The Department of Health and the South African Society of Physiotherapists dedicated this week to create awareness and educate South Africans on back problems.

CapeTalk’s Pippa Hudson speaks to Ina Diener, President of SA Society of Physiotherapy about back conditions, common causes and prevention measures.

According to Diener a common cause of back pain is sitting in the same position for too long. She says 80 percent of the world’s population are affected by back pains.

Diener says that movement can really be beneficial. She says that if your job requires you to seat for too long, getting an alarm clock that will remind you every hour to stand and move around will save you from back problems.

Back pain prevention tips

  • Every few hours, get up and walk around
  • Lie on your back in the most comfortable position
  • Use a firm mattress or the floor
  • Exercise regularly
