Oscar sentence: online reaction

Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced Oscar Pistorius to a five year prison term for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of 14 February 2013. He also received a three year suspended sentence for firing a weapon at a restaurant.

He would qualify to apply for parole once he has served 10 months.

One of the first to respond on Twitter was businessman Donald Trump, who has been offering his views during the trial.

Journalist Alex Crawford has been covering the trial from the beginning made the point that the trial lasted longer than Oscar and Reeva's relationship.

Google indicates that it has over 10 000 searches today for Oscar Pistorius. The second most search term is also Oscar, but this relates to the passing of the 82-year-old fashion designer Oscar del la Renta.

Twitter's trending list following the sentence had 7 of the 10 terms relating to the Oscar Pistoruis trial, even though surprisingly the term Oscar Pistorius was not trending. The #ThingsLongerThanOscarsSentence did not take long to reach the top of the list.

The social media monitoring company ROi Africa reported over 100 000 tweets during the hour following the sentence. Sentiment was principally negative.

Comedian Trevor Noah has not tweeted since the sentence, although he was criticised following his tweet on the day of the killing in 2013.

One of the most followed South African Twitter accounts belongs to the young video blogger Caspar Lee, he tweeted the sentence just after it was handed down to his two million followers.
