It is suspected that the boy had been caught in a rip current and, despite extensive search and rescue efforts, no sign of the missing teenager has been found.

The teenager has been identified as Khanyisile Njatyela from Mannenberg, who was out with a group of school friends at the weekend.

Dr Cleeve Robertson, CEO of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), says that fatal drownings are preventable with more water safety awareness and education.

NSRI Bakoven station commander Bruce Davidson in a statement said eyewitnesses reported that the teenager went missing at 10:45.

CapeTalk presenter Kieno Kammies also spoke with Shafiek Abrahams, Principal at Phoenix Secondary School where Njatyela was enrolled.
