The importance of mother to child communication

Ilifa Labantwana is an NGO which specializes in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) field.

They’ve recently launched a campaign called Love, Play, Talk which is encouraging the closeness of the child-parent relationship by talking to the baby while it’s still in utero and keeping the conversation going after they are born.

Ilifa Labantwana was established in 2009 with the aim to offer cost effective ECD services and support for young children in South Africa.

Speaking to CapeTalk’s Pippa Hudson, Sonja Giese, project director of Ilifa Labantwana says a lot of attention has been given to early childhood development and that has taken the focus away from the ordinary magic of communication between mother and child.

We remind parents of the importance of early touch, speaking to your child and making eye contact.

The Love, Play, Talk campaign is looking at encouraging fathers to also be involved in their child’s development and have physical contact with the child.

Children who are spoken to and have responsive care will develop parts of the brain that will enable them to learn and socialise better.
