Empowerment pioneer MIC celebrates 20 years

The Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC), a major shareholder in Primedia Broadcasting (which owns 702, Cape Talk and EWN), traces its beginnings to 1995 - one year after the first democratic elections.

The story, says former NUM general secretary and MIC chairman, Frans Baleni, began in 1987 when a decision was taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) that "miners armed with skills must take full control."
