Transitioning from man to woman 'is not an easy path'

The transitioning of Caitlyn Jenner into a woman opened the world up to what transgender people go through.

29-year-old Johannesburg doctor and transgender activist, Anastacia Tomson, took a decision to transition from male to female recently. In a video interview with EWN, Tomson highlights the challenges that transgender people face both locally and internationally.

702's John Robbie also spoke to her this morning.

Listen to the interview below:

It's about my identity. It’s more about my sense of self, than anything else. Society assigned me a man at birth and internally my sense of identity is I know I am a woman.

We don’t have a choice in the matter of our identities. That is something that is completely innate - I didn't choose to be a woman, I was born this way.

There is a lot of prejudice and misconception that people do in the name of religion or family values. Prejudice is prejudice and intolerance is intolerance. This is not a choice, we're human beings just like anyone else; we just want to survive and feel comfortable in our own skin. It is difficult and it has to be individualized to every situation but my advice would be: try and get as much support as you can, it’s not an easy path.
