A lesson on 'Black Twitter' from Kwanele Sosibo

Mail & Guardian reporter Kwanele Sosibo says Black Twitter is definitely a thing.

He recently wrote an article looking into the online identity, which is primarily focused on issues of interest to the black community, and what Sosibo calls "the people's intelligence."

The more people talk about it, the more they want to know what it is. There are communities out there and it's not this monolithic thing that you can simplistically characterise.

According to Sosibo, Black Twitter portrays a consciousnesses rather than a skin colour and has democratising attributes.

He says the use of hashtags indicates the importance of asserting one's self, experiences, views and identity.

Although only a small proportion of South Africa's black demographic is reflected on Twitter, Sosibo says that the space is a significant platform to critique dominant discourse and exhibit the "sharpness of the average man on the streets."
