We'll reclaim SA from corrupt elite, say activists

Over 300 civil society groups and religious leaders joined thousands of ordinary South Africans in organised anti-corruption marches in Pretoria and Cape Town today.

The marchers, including unions and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), united under the Unite Against Corruption banner, saying they will reclaim South Africa from a corrupt elite running the country.

702's Xolani Gwala spoke to EWN reporter Govan Whittles about what transpired at the Pretoria march.

Over 300 civil society groups and religious leaders are said to have taken part in the march to the Union Buildings. The marches, in Pretoria and Cape Town, were also endorsed by the Desmond and Leah Tutu Foundation.

A memorandum was handed over to Minister in the Presidency Jef Radebe at the seat of government today.

The coalition said today’s march was in support of transparent funding models for South Africa’s political parties. It also said it wants to bring an end to state-owned enterprises being used to benefit corrupt individuals.

Gwala also spoke to ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa , who attended the march, Section 27 director's Mark Heywood, and Dr Thabo Makgoba, the Archbishop of of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa.
