Debates over ANCYL backing in 2017 might distract ruling party - Seepe

Weekend reports claim that the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has publicly declared its support for Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for the governing party's 2017 elective conference.

Professor Sipho Seepe, an independent political analyst, said it was probable that honest discussions were underway regarding the best candidate to replace President Jacob Zuma.

Seepe said debating the ideal ANC presidential replacement may divert the party's focus ahead of the local government elections in 2016.

There is no doubt that there are discussions about who will replace Jacob Zuma as the president of the ANC and of the country. However, opening these debates on the eve of local government elections might divert attention from what the ANC must focus on. The party must focus on governing well in order to win the next elections.
