Meet Rohan Vos, creator of Rovos Rail and the ultra-opulent Pride of Africa

The Money Show's Bruce Whitfield interviewed Rohan Vos, who started family-owned railway company Rovos Rail in 1989, for his weekly "Shapeshifter" feature.

Rovos Rail’s train – Pride of Africa – consistently ranks as one of the world’s best.

On the Pride of Africa a staff of 24 cares for about 50 passengers.

Rovos Rail’s train derailed on 21 April 2010 near Pretoria. Three people were killed and several passengers were injured.

Rohan Vos describes operating a privately owned train on state-owned railway lines as the biggest challenge of running his business.

We have eight or nine chefs on the staff.

Rohan Vos

Our train is, at the moment, on its way to Dar es Salaam. On our first trip there we had no passengers in the one direction! It almost bankrupted me! Today these long trips keep the boat afloat.

Rohan Vos

About 6% of our passengers are South African.

Rohan Vos

I’ve been on most of the great trains of the world. We have the lead when it comes to style and food.

Rohan Vos

We’ve never had a problem with security.

Rohan Vos

The family has no choice; we’re very active in the business!
