The Presidency's announcement yesterday that Vuma Glenton Mashinini is to head the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has not been well received is some quarters.
Mashinini is a former Deputy Chief Electoral Officer and a former Special Projects Advisor for President Jacob Zuma.
Stephen Grootes spoke to United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader, Bantu Holomisa who questioned this appointment.
Grootes also spoke to political commentator Professor Steven Friedman about the fairness of Mashinini's appointment. Friedman said for there to be a show of a seriousness about a multi-party democracy, there needs to be a confidence in the free and fairness of an election (especially by opposition parties).
