Glen Mashinini says his track record 'speaks for itself'

Newly appointed Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) head, Vuma Glen Mashinini has responded to criticism by saying that his track record speaks for itself.

Political parties have raised concerns about his impartiality after having once served as President Jacob Zuma’s special projects adviser.

However, Mashinini told CapeTalk and 702 host Redi Tlhabi that his appointment has been criticised based on perceptions, and not on facts.

Listen to the full conversation from The Redi Tlhabi Show:

In a democracy, a person in my position must be objected to scrutiny. However, the concerns that have been raised are based on perception and not facts.

According to Mashinini, detractors ought to rest their argument on the basis of merits instead, stating that he is a professional "first and foremost".

Mashinini said that he did not understand why he should be punished for having served prominent clients in the past.

The electoral commission is governed by our constitution.I am eligible to serve on the grounds of the law.

He added that the commission is a collective and well-protected entity, and cannot be influenced or rigged by an individual.

Mashinini also urged all South Africans to become registered voters and educate themselves about the electoral processes.
