29 arrested #FeesMustFall protesters released on warning

At least 29 of the protesting students arrested on Wednesday have been released on warning this afternoon.

This comes after the #FeesMustFall students entered into the parliamentary precinct in Cape Town, protesting against tuition fee increases.

According to Popo Mfubu, a legal representative of one of the students, the case has been remanded until next year.

EWN reporter, Siyabonga Sesant said many supporters outside the Cape Town Magistrate Court where denied access into the building.

He told CapeTalk and 702's Stephen Grootes that they had been charged with gathering illegally, trespassing on a national key point.

Earlier on Thursday, 702 host John Robbie spoke to Mfubu, who said his client, Kgotso, was charged with high treason and trespassing.

Listen to the conversation below:

I was expecting that they would charge them with trespassing and contravening the regulations in terms of the Gatherings Act... This is a scare tactic.

However, the police issued a statement, saying there were no treason charges laid against the protesting students.

Contrary to allegation doing the rounds that there were Cape Town students who were charged with Treason following the mayhem at the Parliament on Wednesday, the management of the police and the Hawks would like to set the record straight and dispel such malicious rumours

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, SAPS spokesperson
