'Tourism industry will have to work hard to repair SA's image'

Tourism minister Derek Hanekom has welcomed the changes to the controversial visa regulations, announced by government's inter-ministerial committee.

Meanwhile, advisory services director at Grant Thornton, Lee-Anne Bac says the impact of visa regulations on the tourism industry has been greater than anticipated.

Listen to the full conversation from The Midday Report with Stephen Grootes:

Bac said it would take a long time for the industry to recover, for the country to repair its intentional reputation and communicate the latest changes.

It's going to take hard work, the tourism industry will have to work very hard to restore South Africa's image.

Tourism industry 'turned a corner', says Hanekom

According to Hanekom, the concessions to the controversial visa regulations are a sign of progress.

I was confident from the beginning that we would need to make changes. Right now, we have a complete agreement of the direction that we should be going and where visas should be required.

Derek Hanekom, Minister of Tourism

Hanekom said it will no longer be mandatory for inbound travellers from visa-exempt countries to carry unabridged birth certificates for children travelling with them.

He outlined the concessions made by government and how they will affect South African tourism.

Listen to the full conversation from CapeTalk's Breakfast with Kieno Kammies:

These measures will ensure the balance between national security and economic interests of the country, without compromising child safety.
