SA’s ‘baby step’ to paternity leave

Setlamorago Thobejane of Select Committee on Petitions said a petition to extend paternity leave could soon be implemented.

We are saying children and their fathers should have the same bond as their mothers. It will eliminate the old tradition of mothers being mostly responsible for the children.

A South African father’s campaign for fathers to spend more time with their newborns is one step closer to becoming law.

Hendri Terblanche drew up a petition last year for 10 days’ paternity leave to be provided for fathers in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

South African fathers may take three days ‘family responsibility’ leave a year, but there is no official provision for paternity leave.
