South Africa slaughters over a million chickens a year and and this results in a few mountains of chicken feathers being wasted.
Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) researcher & PhD student, Tamrat Tsefaye, is conducting tests to see if something useful could be made with the feathers such as clothing, car parts, shampoos, bio fuels etc.
Mike Wills (standing in for John Maytham) spoke to Tsefaye about his plans to make use of chicken feathers to create valuable products.

He says there’s currently 528 million pounds of chicken feathers per annum in South Africa that are going to waste. The plan is to extract keratin form the feathers and incorporate it in the automobile and aeroplane industry
