South Africa’s biggest water utility, Rand Water has started implementing water restrictions in some areas in Gauteng because of increased demand spurred by persistent high temperatures.
702's John Robbie spoke to Principal Researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Francois Engelbrecht, who led the research which predicted that El Nino events would decrease rainfall, warning that this year’s summer would be the hottest South Africa had ever experienced.
Engelbrecht said that South Africa should keep an eye out for Climate Change negotiations taking place in Paris in November this year and put pressure on government to prioritise climate change issues in SA.
