Could affirmative consent help decrease sexual violence? - Get a verbal "Yes"

Dr Eve looked at what affirmative consent is especially around issues of sexual violence. This issue has led to a range of policy interventions intended to reduce the number of people who fall victim to these crimes.

According to Dr Eve affirmative consent is an idea or standard that requires the person who initiates sexual contact must receive a VERBAL YES (affirmative consent) from the other person before engaging in any sexual activity.

Listen to the full conversation on the Redi Tlhabi Show below:

Dr Eve says affirmative consent affects both men and women (The initiator). She says that there are assumptions that men are the initiators of sexual activities therefore this issue doesn’t concern women. She says it is absolutely not true.

It is constant checking in (verbally) on both sides because things may change, do not make an assumption.

Dr Eve, clinical sexologist
