Happy Birthday MaBrrr!

Today would have been the 51st birthday of the late pop singer, Brenda Fassie.

Fondly known as the "Queen of the Vocals" and dubbed the "Madonna of the Townships" by Time Magazine, Brenda Fassie was one of South Africa's most popular vocalists, mixing African vocals with a slick international pop sound.

Fassie has a massive amount of hits, however the anti-apartheid hit Black President is the song she is best known for worldwide. Vulindlela and Weekend Special remain favourites on wedding, party and Pop Idol playlists.

MaBrrr, was only 39 years old when her life support equipment was turned off. She was hospitalised on 24 April 2004 after slipping into a coma, after suffering a asthma-related heart failure (from a cocaine overdose). She died on the the 9th May 2004 and is buried in Langa, Cape Town, where she was born.
