I can't close a facility government doesn't own - Mahlangu

Gauteng’s health department has terminated the contract with Life Healthcare Esidimeni Hospital which was worth more than R320 million in the past year for the treatment of “around 2378” patients with psychiatric disorders.

Gauteng MEC for Health Qedani Mahlangu spoke to 702's John Robbie about the closure of the facilities and what will happen to the 2378 patients thereafter.

Mahlangu said the provincial government no longer had the financial resources to subsidise these facilities.

Listen to the conversation below:

I can't close a facility that government doesn't own... The relationship with Life Healthcare Esidimeni Hospital started in 1979. Over a period of time we saw ourselves paying over R300m. As things stand we do not have the ability to continue with that relationship.

Meanwhile, patients and those caring for patients with psychiatric disorders are panicking about what will happen in the aftermath.
