'Cabinet poised to kick off nuclear procurement process'

The Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA (Necsa) says it's ready to support South Africa's nuclear new build program using its existing capacities.

Necsa is expected to lead South Africa’s proposed nuclear-build programme of six reactors to produce 9 600 megawatts.

Necsa CEO Phumzile Tshelane spoke to 702's John Robbie about the organisation's readiness and plans to support the programme.

Tshelane said Necsa was busy with preparations for the procurement process which government would sign off in due course.

We're waiting to sign intergovernmental agreements with Canada and Japan... Cabinet is poised to make a decision as to when the start of the procurement process will be.
