The South African Guild of Actors (Saga) is currently hosting a conference to discuss pay and working conditions for professional actors.
Saga has invited representatives from the International Federation of Actors (FIA), the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (Actra) and SAG-AFTRA of the USA, for a series of two-day conferences in Johannesburg and Cape Town (between 2 - 6 November).
Saga's Jack Devnarain spoke to Stephen Grootes about raising actors' awareness about their rights.
Listen to the conversation below:
Actors need to understand their own status. For a long time actors have been fed the idea that we are employees and we fall under the ambit of labour law... there are benefits to the actor as a freelancer, as an independent contractor; and unfortunately there is some reluctance to move away from the old ways of thinking.— Jack Devnarain, SA Guild of Actors
