Lead SA: Cultivating a reading culture in young children

Read to Rise is a non-profit organisation committed to promoting youth literacy in schools in South Africa's under-resourced communities.

Roscoe Williams, Programme Manager for Read to Rise says that they are trying their utmost best to change the lives of young people in Mitchells Plain.

One of the reasons children are not reading is because they don’t have access to book

According to Williams, community libraries in Mitchells Plain are either not safe or not properly stocked and that’s what encouraged the mini library project to take the books to where school kids are.

Read to Rise provides brand new books to primary school children.

Some of this leaners have never owned a book in their lives.

To date, Read to Rise have visited 46 primary schools in Mitchells Plain and have distributed books to over 8000 learners.
