Beach safety a top concern as festive season approaches

Safety and security at Cape Town's popular beaches has come to the fore as the festive season approaches.

With thousands of people expected to visit local shores, there are challenges in ensuring the safety of the public from both a crime and water safety perspective.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson, Craig Lambinon has urged the public to be alert to rip currents and lifeguards on duty.

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town's Richard Bosman said beach-goers can rest assured that the presence of authorities will be strong, following reports that lifeguards have abandoned their posts due to criminal activity at busy beaches.
