South Africans must wake up to the risks of antibiotic resistance, says WHO
The World Health Organization (WHO) found that a high number of South Africans misunderstand antibiotics usage and the risks of antibiotic resistance.
CapeTalk's John Maytham spoke to Prof. Marc Mendelson Co-Chair South African Antibiotic Stewardship Programme President of the Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa.
According to Mendelson, antibiotics are a life changing miracle drugs which people rely on to treat serious bacteria and infections. He says serious measures should be taken now to create awareness on the misuse of the drugs.

Talking to Kienno Kammies this morning,WHO's Dr Marc Sprenger said that although the country fares better than other on the Continent, more can be done to raise awareness around antibiotic resistance and the misuse of medication.

Sprenger explained that antibiotic resistance could mean that patients with deadly infections or diseases cannot be effectively treated.
The WHO surveyed over 10 000 people from 12 countries to find how people understand antibiotic resistance and how it could affect them and their families.
