We know why they bark, bite and growl. But why on earth do dogs howl?

Pet owner or not, every one has encountered the shrilling and often puzzling howl of a dog as it tilts its head back.

Humans and dogs have been side-by-side for years, but how many of us have considered why mutts make this noise?

In the video below, Kitty the dog howls (or harmonises, depending on your sense of tone deafness) to a song playing while in the car.

While howling is still somewhat of a mystery; these are the most accepted reasons for the behaviour:

According to dog psychologists, howling can be a way of canine communication and a response to other high-pitched sounds in various social settings.

Others suggest, howling is a genetic remnant of ancestry from wolves and can also be an expression of anxiety, sickness or injury.
