According to various media reports, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa announced an immediate ban on legal and illegal farm evictions.
Ramaphosa reportedly announced the moratorium after he and a delegation of senior ministers met agriculture and farm labour representatives in Paarl, Western Cape, on Saturday.
"We are calling on all farmers who have plans for evictions to stop," City Press quoted Ramophosa as saying after the meeting.
Ramaphosa said this was an emergency measure "effective immediately", and would remain in force until next year, when a follow-up meeting would be held to find "concrete solutions" to the agriculture sector's problems.
But Prof Ruth Hall from PLAAS says Ramaphosa does not have the authority to make such announcements.
