Chaos in Parliament

The African National Congress (ANC) last night drove its report absolving President Jacob Zuma from responsibility for the abuse of funds for his Nkandla home through the National Assembly, despite an opposition filibuster that brought pandemonium to Parliament over the security upgrade saga for a second time.

The report was compiled by ANC Members of Parliament after opposition parties walked out in protest at the way in which the process of compiling the report was being handled.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) contested strongly to Parliamentary Speaker Baleka Mbete’s attempts to stop Members of Parliament from bringing forward motions in earlier proceedings yesterday.

Opposition parties wished to debate issues which have been tied to President Zuma.

In the early evening, the DA also requested the National Assembly to reinstate corruption charges against President Zuma.

Africa Melane, standing in for Kieno Kammies, spoke to Mmusi Maimane (parliamentary leader for the DA) and Moloto Mothapo (parliamentary spokesperson for the ANC):
