Wits to poll students and staff on way forward

Professor Adam Habib vice chancellor of Wits University says he has been inundated with letters from parents, students and staff who say they want the academic programme to resume.

An online poll will be created to allow students with access to the internet to say if they want classes to resume or not. Provisions will be be made for students without access to the internet to be able to participate. Habib says an sms system will be created for those students.

It's really to give a voice and to understand what the vast majority of students and academics are saying about the academic programme and what should happen in that regard.

Prof Adam Habib, Vice Chancellor at Wits University

Habib says the results of the poll will be made available and also show how many people took part. Whatever the outcome, Habib says he can't open the university if he can't guarantee the safety of the students.

The poll question will be along these lines: Would you like Wits to open on Monday to resume the academic programme even if security plans have to be put in place to ensure it?
