Protesting students gatecrash Nzimande's meeting #Fees2017

Student protests have led to closure of several universities in the country for fear of staff victimisation and damage to property.

Minister for Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, was addressing the media and the board of alumni on the current state of protests when a group of students entered the venue and refused to leave.

EWN reporter Barry Bateman, says the technical response team "Amaberete" managed to remove protesters from the building and several students were arrested.

He says the remaining students are also demanding that the police arrest them too so they can join their colleagues.

It appears the students are now shifting the focus from the Universities to government where the funding for higher education is coming from, reports Bateman.

Minister Blade Nzimande says these protests need to come to an end. He says it is entirely unacceptable that a minority group of students hold the majority ransom.

The minister says at last count, there has been R600 million worth of damage to university property.

Meanwhile, Wits university students are waiting in anticipation to hear from vice chancellor Adam Habib.

According to EWN reporter Thando Khubeka, students are complaining about racism within the institution, particularly in the medical facilities.

They've also raised issues around lack of accommodation saying they are forced to look for accommodation in places that are not safe.
