Lesufi apologises for reinstating teacher who had sex with a learner

A teacher who was allegedly caught having sex with a 17-year-old matric pupil at Masithwalisane Secondary School in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni is reportedly being reinstated at the school by the Gauteng Education Department.

Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, says the teacher since been removed from the school and apologised to the learners and the parents for reinstating him.

Lesufi admitted that he made the call to have the teacher reinstated saying the facts were not properly presented to him.

When the appeal was brought to his attention, Lesufi says the case was presented as a kiss between the teacher and a leaner and not as sexual assault.

I don't know how this matter escaped my hawk-like eye to an extent that we have egg on our faces and I truly apologise.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

We are reporting the teacher to the South African Council of Educators with an intention of terminating his membership to be a teacher, meaning he cannot teach in any school within our country.

Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng Education MEC

Lesufi says this action will ensure that no leaner need to fear attending school and encountering this teacher.
