Ocean Basket denies serving "fake" hake

Ocean basket has denied that it serves hake substitutes in its dishes.

This is after a Daily Voice newspaper report about a Cape Town businessman's experience of some Ocean Basket restaurants serving his children angelfish, instead of hake fingers which are advertised on the restaurant's menu.

Hake is absolutely our pride and joy. Its a thing the company was found on, and we serve it with absolute passion. People know it so well, so there's no way we could confuse people and substitute it

Jean Sloane, Group Marketing Executive at Ocean Basket

On 702's #NightTalk, Ocean Basket Group Marketing Executive Jean Sloane says that it might have happened that the franchisees concerned might have used an off cut of angelfish.

She says it might have been the case that they did not want to waste the diversity of fish on the restaurant's menu.

For us its really important that we train our waiters correctly to advise people that we have this situation, would you mind if we use that, or would you prefer hake

Jean Sloane, Group Marketing Executive at Ocean Basket

Sloane insisted that the alleged use of angelfish in some Ocean Basket franchises was not a profit driven decision, and says that the restaurant will ensure its staff is trained to communicate with customers if there is a need to serve a meal which is not as advertised on the menu.
