The National Council of SPCA's (NSPCA) has spoken out against the allegedly inhumane abattoir that supplies pork to major South African retailers.
NSPCA executive director Marcelle Meredith said the abattoir continues to gas the animals, despite warnings that the method used to incapacitate the pigs causes them suffering.
Meanwhile, Andrew Cocks, managing executive at Pork Packers, who supply meat to Woolworths and Enterprise Food (which is owned by Tiger Brands) said what they do is common practice and added that the procedure was an improvement from previous animal welfare systems.
