As student protests continue across the country students have been complaining of police heavy handedness and brutality in some cases.
Johan Burger, senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) says police have been criticised over the years for conducting themselves in what has been described as unnecessary and brutal, although this is evident in a small percentage of the number of incidents they attend to.
He says he hasn't seen any change in the behaviour of the police in handling protests.

Burger says violent incidents that the police have to deal with every year have increased. Incidents that turn violent have increased by 250%, he says.
