Haven Night Shelter Welfare Organisation
The Haven Night Shelter Welfare Organisation which was established in 1978 in Cape Town and was registered as a Section 21 Public Company in 1983.

The Haven, as it is widely known as, provides temporary shelter, physical care, social welfare and family re-unification services to adult homeless persons in the Western Cape. While providing immediate assistance & support during their homelessness, the Haven’s ultimate objective is to get the adult homeless person back to a home as soon as possible.
They operate from 14 shelters in the Western Cape and currently have 10 fieldworkers operating from various shelters.

Africa Melane visited two of them this afternoon- one in Napier Street here in Greenpoint & another in District Six. They have 950 formal beds collectively and can make emergency shelter available for about 50 people.

They also encourage the public to not give money to people living on the street but rather a Haven Passport at a cost of R10.

The Passport will afford the holder access to their nearest Haven night shelter and, once they get there, assessment (by a social worker and a medical practitioner if deemed necessary), food, a hot shower, a warm meal and a change of clothes & shoes, and a bed to sleep in for the night if these are available.

The Haven Head Office can be contacted on is 021 425 4700 or email them on info@haven.org.za.

A full list of their 14 shelters is available on www.haven.org.za.
